People ask all the time what there is to do in Charleston.
The truth is—there's no shortage of places.
The real question is: which ones will actually become part of your life?
Because depending on where you live, some of these places become your routine… and others become something you only do when family comes to town.
And that's a very different experience.
Shem Creek is one of those places that doesn't need to be complicated to be good.
It's dinner. It's a couple of drinks. And then it's walking down the boardwalk as the sun starts to set.
You'll see boats coming in, sometimes dolphins, and honestly—watching people try to park their boats can be entertainment all on its own.
It's easy. It's social. And it's the kind of place that turns into a habit without you realizing it.
Folly is my favorite beach, and it's not hard to explain why.
It has personality. It has energy. And it has enough going on that you don't feel like you're just going to the beach—you feel like you're going somewhere.
There are great places to eat—Taco Boy, The Crab Shack, Rita's—and the pier gives you something to do even if you're not planning to stay all day.
It's the place you take family. It's the place you take friends. And it's the place that somehow works for everyone.
Isle of Palms feels different.
It's quieter. It's more private. And the people who live there tend to like it that way.
There are good restaurants, and I do enjoy going there for dinner—but it's not a place that feels busy or crowded in the same way Folly can.
It feels more like home than a destination.
Sullivan's has a different kind of presence.
The beaches are a little less known, which means you can actually have some space. There's history there that gives it a sense of depth, and the restaurants are consistently really good.
It's not loud about what it offers—but once you spend time there, you understand why people love it.
Downtown is always going to be one of my favorite places, but not for the reasons people usually think.
Yes, Market Street is fun. The vendors, the shops, especially when you're looking at local items—it's worth taking your time there.
But what I enjoy most is walking.
Walking along the waterfront. Walking through the streets. Letting yourself notice things.
Downtown can be busy, but it can also be incredibly peaceful if you experience it the right way.
And if you're someone who appreciates art, you'll find it without even looking.
Charleston is easy to fall in love with.
But what matters more is whether these places become part of your everyday life… or something you only visit occasionally.
Because where you live determines how often you actually enjoy all of this.
And that's the piece most people don't think through until after they've already made a decision.
