If you've ever stacked firewood neatly along the side of your home or tucked extra lumber near the garage, it probably felt practical—even responsible.

But here's the part most homeowners don't realize:

That stack of wood can quietly become an open invitation to termites.

The Problem Isn't the Wood—It's the Location

Termites don't appear out of nowhere. They're already in the soil around your home, constantly searching for a food source.

And untreated wood?
That's exactly what they're looking for.

When wood is stacked directly on the ground and close to your home, you're unintentionally creating a bridge between their natural habitat and your structure.

Once they find the woodpile, it's only a matter of time before they start exploring beyond it.

How Termites Make the Jump to Your Home

Subterranean termites—the most common type in our area—travel through soil and build what are called "mud tubes" to stay protected and hydrated.

When firewood or lumber is:

  • Resting directly on the ground
  • Stored against or very close to your home
  • Left untreated and exposed to moisture

…it becomes the perfect starting point.

From there, termites don't see a boundary between your woodpile and your home's structure.

To them, it's all just food.

Why "Out of Sight" Doesn't Mean "Out of Risk"

One of the biggest assumptions homeowners make is:

"It's just a small stack. It's not touching the house that much."

Here's the reality:

Termites don't need much.
They don't need light.
They don't need open space.

They just need access.

Even a few inches of separation—or a stack placed near a foundation—can be enough for them to bridge the gap.

The Cost of Overlooking This

Termite damage is rarely covered by homeowners insurance. And unlike a roof leak or HVAC issue, it often goes unnoticed until the damage is significant.

We're not talking about a quick repair.

We're talking about:

  • Structural wood damage
  • Subfloor and framing issues
  • Repairs that can climb into the thousands (or more)

All from something as simple as where wood was stored.

What Homeowners Should Do Instead

The good news? This is an easy fix once you know what to look for.

A few simple adjustments can make all the difference:

  • Store wood at least 20 feet away from your home when possible
  • Keep it elevated off the ground using a rack or platform
  • Avoid direct contact with exterior walls or siding
  • Cover the top only, allowing airflow to keep the wood dry
  • Use treated wood if storing closer to structures

A Small Habit That Protects a Big Investment

This is one of those details that doesn't feel urgent—until it is.

And the truth is, most homeowners aren't careless… they're just unaware.

That's why this matters.

Because protecting your home isn't always about major upgrades or renovations.
Sometimes it's about small, informed decisions that prevent bigger problems from ever starting.
