One of the things Terry and I enjoy most about living in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is how easy it is to find relaxed, welcoming places to eat. You don't always need a big occasion. Sometimes the best evenings are simply grabbing dinner at a favorite local spot and enjoying time together.

Over the years we've found a few casual restaurants in Mount Pleasant that we keep coming back to.

Melvin's Barbecue

If you've lived around Charleston for any length of time, you've probably heard of Melvin's BBQ. It's a long-time Lowcountry favorite, and the pulled pork never disappoints.

Terry and I still enjoy stopping by when we're craving classic barbecue. The smoky flavor and traditional sides always feel like a taste of Charleston history.

I will admit one thing though — I'm still not fully over the day they switched from Coca-Cola to Pepsi. For some of us, that was a big adjustment.

Fortunately, good barbecue makes up for a lot.

Dog & Duck in Park West

The Dog & Duck in Park West is one of those places that feels like a true neighborhood gathering spot in Mount Pleasant.

We especially enjoy checking out the chalkboard specials, which always seem to feature something fresh and interesting. It's the kind of place where you can meet friends, watch a game, or simply relax after a long day.

This time of year is particularly fun because March Madness brackets are popping up everywhere, and the energy in the restaurant reflects it.

San Miguel Mexican Restaurant

Another Mount Pleasant favorite for Terry and me is San Miguel.

One of the things we appreciate is that it's easy to keep the night simple. We can share a plate of nachos, enjoy good conversation, and still walk out the door for around $30.

That's what I call a solid date night in Mount Pleasant.

Just one small warning: the sweet tea is powerful, so pace yourself.

SOL Southwest Kitchen & Tequila Bar

Another restaurant we enjoy in Mount Pleasant is SOL Southwest Kitchen & Tequila Bar.

The atmosphere is lively, the food is consistently good, and it's a great place when you're in the mood for something flavorful.

My go-to order is the Carne Asada Fries, and I always ask them to hold the jalapeños. Terry happily takes those off my hands, so it works out perfectly for both of us.

And the drinks are always spot on—especially the ones made with tequila, which they seem to do particularly well.

The Joy of Local Favorites

Living in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina isn't just about beautiful neighborhoods and coastal views. It's also about the small places where people gather, enjoy good food, and run into familiar faces.

These local restaurants are just a few of the spots Terry and I enjoy when we want a relaxed evening out.

And if you've lived here for a while, chances are you have a few favorite places of your own.
